José Hernández Popular Art Museum | Palermo

The museum is located in an area of the Palermo neighborhood known as Palermo Chico, this exclusive area, is cut through by two important avenues, Figueroa Alcorta and Libertador, which form a maze of irregular streets and curves designed by the French architect and landscape artist Carlos Thays. Large houses and stately palaces once inhabited by the some of the country’s most prestigious families are now embassies, museums and other sites of cultural interest. The museum is housed in a petit hotel, donated by the Bunge family, which merges French and Italian styles from the early 20th century. It was inaugurated in 1948, and is devoted to upgrading historical and contemporary popular art, as well as the works of artisans. For such purpose, it exhibits fabulous collection of silverware, fabrics, pottery, leather, bone and vegetable fiber pieces, among other materials, representing the country’s aboriginal communities and Creole traditions as well as the current urban crafts. An excellent chance to appreciate Argentine crafts and enjoy a privileged urban landscape and opportunity to see other interesting cultural options.
