Lavalle Square | San Nicolás

Plaza Lavalle is a three-block space located in the neighborhood of San Nicolás, delimited by Libertad, Lavalle, and Talcahuano Streets and Córdoba Avenue. The square is of great historical importance. The monument to Lavalle is built on an 18 meter (60 ft) column. Lavalle was a politician and military man involved in the Independence wars and very much questioned for having killed Manuel Dorrego. In 1890, the square was the stage for the confrontations of the Revolución del Parque (Revolution of the Park), between the supporters of the Unión Cívica (Civic Union) led by Leandro Alem and the pro-government people, under the command of Miguel Juárez Celman. A great number of historical buildings and cultural or political interest buildings are around the square. The Hall of Justice hosts the Supreme Court, created in 1863. Opposite, you can find the famous Colón Theater, and Presidente Roca High School and the Instituto Libre de Segunda Enseñanza (ILSE). In the northeast corner of the square, you can find the synagogue known as “Templo de Libertad” (Freedom Temple) (which hosts the Jewish Museum in its inside) and the Cervantes National Theater, which was inaugurated in 1921 and is one of the most important theaters in the country.
