Café Tortoni | Monserrat

Founded in 1858, in the corner of Esmeralda and Rivadavia Sts., it was thought up by a French man called Touan, based on the idea of honoring the Parisian Tortoni. Only during the 1880´s “El Tortoni” was moved to the other corner, where it stayed, boasting about its prestige and history. Its decoration maintains the warmth and magic of its origins due to the marble tables, the characteristic armchairs, the stained glass ceiling and the many details that make it the cozy place that attracts passers-by. Between the ´20s and ´40s its basement was the venue of the “Peña del Tortoni”, famous artistic event where important intellectual and artistic characters would take part, among them Benito Quinquela Martin, Alfonsina Storni, Marcelo T. de Alvear, Luigi Pirandello, Federico Garcia Lorca, Xul Solar, and Juan de Dios Filiberto. Currently, we can find “La Bodega del Tortoni” in the same place, hosting different shows and concerts. There is also a small back room where all types of music expressions are shown, mainly tango and jazz.
