The clubs of the city have settled in Great Buenos Aires, where national and other tournaments take place, and large crowds of followers assist.
Since 1965, the national team has been called “Los Pumas”, and has achieved many significant prizes at an international level. The most important in their history was the 3º position in the World Cup celebrated on November in France. The best player of Argentina team was the talented Juan Martin Hernandez, followed by Felipe Contepomi, the top scorer of Los Pumas. The captain and most famous player, Agustin Pichot, has announced his retirement from the national team after his performance in the world cup.
This popularity and performance gave place to the organization of many teams in several clubs of the country, which are nowadays part of the Unión Argentina de Rugby (Argentine Rugby Union).
Along the years Los Pumas have earned themselves a certain status of privilege worldwide. They always face the rivaling teams the same way no matter who they are; there are records of very important victories over Australia and France, among others, and outstanding performances like those against New Zealand and England.
Among their achievements, apart from the success in last year´s world cup, we find the fifth place in world Cup Wales 99, five victories in the Pan-American Rugby Championship between the years 1995 and 2002 and a third place in the III Rugby World Cup Sevens, which took place in Mar del Plata in the year 2001.
Hugo Porta has been the most outstanding Argentine player in the world. His most prestigious years were during the ‘70s and ‘80s, having been essential for the team.
