There is in Buenos Aires a gay trend that has made the city the “gay capital” of Latin America. It has its own universe of places for all levels, and for all tastes, from the formal types to the most unconventional ones either in hotels, telos, clubs or milongas (where men dance together with absolute freedom). However, the possibility to meet people exists in any place, even when it is not labeled as a gay or lesbian place, as Buenos Aires is a gay friendly city.
After struggling so many years, the gay community accomplished some very important things; among others, the Legislature of Buenos Aires City passed a law in December 2002 allowing the Civil Union between two people, regardless of their sex or sexual orientation, as long as they prove they have endured a stable and public relationship for the previous two years. This law requires that at least two people witness to the relationship. Regarding the rights, obligations and benefits, the parties are treated the same way spouses are. This way they are now able to celebrate a different union in these new times. The union can be dissolved through mutual agreement.
